2014 Destination Writing Workshops
Laura’s intimate workshops are dedicated to the notion that writing can be a pleasure as well as a serious craft. Immerse yourself in your writing and be inspired by the art, food, and culture of Italy or Mexico. Laura Fraser, who knows the local territory and languages well, will open doors to a rich, authentic experience. Workshops include daily classes, receptions, excursions, individual conferences, and some meals (varies by location). Luxurious, historic accommodations in prime getaway locations. Nonfiction, emphasis on memoir, travel, and personal essay. Maximum number of students: 10.
May 10-17: An Italian Writing Affair, Umbria Springtime in Umbria is gorgeous, with fields full of poppies and green rolling hills. Spend a week in a restored medieval farmhouse with an infinity pool and a vast view, with excursions to hilltop towns and trattorias. Last year, the owner of a 1421 olive oil factory sang to us from the Barber of Seville and we learned to make fabulous tiramisu…
September 13-20: An Italian Writing Affair, Puglia Discover one of Italy’s least-traveled, most exquisite regions, the “heel of the boot.” We’ll stay in a luxurious “masseria,” a beautifully restored medieval country house, with a pool, and take excursions to Lecce, famous for its Baroque architecture, and Otranto, a seaside town with magnificent mosaics. Traditional pizzica musicians will play for us as we dine al fresco under the stars.
September 27-Oct. 4: An Italian Writing Affair, Venice: Explore Venice’s lagoon, waterways, centuries-old cuisine, and hidden corners. Step off a boat and back into time, staying at the famous Locanda Cipriani on the island of Torcello.
Nov. 1-8 (Day of the Dead): Mexican Writing Fiesta, San Miguel de Allende The Day of the Dead is beautiful in San Miguel—filled with marigold-strewn altars with mementos to the departed. It is a lovely week to focus on memories. There are many events all week, including the La Calaca arts festival. The workshop is held in a restored, 300-year-old colonial mansion in the center of town, under outdoor porticos.
Laura Fraser is a widely-published magazine writer and NYT-bestselling author of An Italian Affair and All Over the Map. She has taught at numerous venues, including the San Francisco Writers’ Grotto and the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.
