Laura’s writing classes at the Grotto

Second Draft: A works-in-progress workshop

Number of sessions: 4
Meeting time: 6:30-9:00 p.m.
Date: Wednesdays, Feb. 24-March 31 or Thursdays, Feb. 19-March 26

Course fee: $395, $150 deposit.

Enrollment is limited to 10 and by approval. To enroll, please submit a non-fiction writing sample of 800-1000 words to the instructor. Once accepted, all deposits are non-refundable.

Description: Many writers will tell you that writing is 90 percent revision. In this class we will workshop works-in-progress by experienced writers. The works may be memoir, long-form narrative, personal essay, or other forms of creative non-fiction. After an initial meeting, students will be expected to work on revisions for each class or two to end up with a publishable piece (we can also discuss where to publish and how to get your foot in the door).

Personal Essay: From idea to draft in one day

Number of sessions: 1
Meeting time: 10:00 a.m- 3:00 p.m., with lunch
Date: Sunday, January 18 or Sunday, Feb. 1
Course fee: $200, $100 deposit, including lunch (vegetarian/gluten-free options).

Description: How do you write a compelling personal essay? How do you transform your life experiences into something someone else wants to read? If you have something to say but aren’t sure how to get started or how to organize it into a publishable essay, this is the class for you. In this one-day intensive, students will figure out how to focus on which topics and ideas to write about, and how to structure those ideas into an essay that works. You can expect to come in with some random thoughts about what you’d like to write about and leave with the beginnings of an essay, and a sold direction for working on it. Lunch will be catered by Merigan’s, the extraordinary sub shop down the street.
